JEROME AND SIMONA CHAZEN BUILDING / 2 COLUMBUS CIRCLE / NEW YORK, NY 10019

Burke Prize Finalist!

September 01, 2019

I am humbled and honored to have been selected as a finalist for Burke Prize 2019. Additionally, I will have the opportunity to exhibit my artwork at the Museum of Art and Design in New York. This will be my first group exhibition in New York City. The opening will be on October 3, 2019 and the exhibit will run through April 12, 2020 if you are in NYC check it out! Thank you to the jurors for the opportunity to be one of the finalist among an amazing group of artists. And special thanks to my mom and tía Pina y tía Chuy, en paz descance.

“Growing up in a rural small town in México I witness my aunts and mother cross-stitch designs on textiles, following patterns and symbols by the color to complete a flower bouquet, a landscape, or a portrait of a religious figure. I never understood what they were doing, why they were doing it, and what their motivations were. My aunt and mother introduced me to art, craft, design, and love for labor. They showed me the meaning of having a passion for creating and leaving artifacts behind. These artifacts captured my family’s stories, knowledge, and genetic memories.”

About the Exhibition
An exhibition of works from the 2019 finalists for the Museum's Burke Prize, awarded to a contemporary artist under the age of forty-five working in glass, fiber, clay, metal, and/or wood. Selected by a jury of professionals in the fields of art, craft, and design, the finalists represent emerging voices expanding the disciplines at the core of American studio craft movement whose highly accomplished work demonstrates a strong use of materials, innovative processes, and conceptual rigor and relevance.

Named for Marian and Russell Burke, two passionate collectors of craft and longtime supporters of MAD, the Burke Prize is an unrestricted award of $50,000. The winner will be announced November 4 at MAD Ball, the Museum's annual benefit gala and dinner.

The exhibition is curated by MAD Assistant Curator Samantha De Tillio and Assistant Manager of Curatorial Affairs Angelik Vizcarrondo-Laboy with support from Curatorial Assistant Alida Jekabson.

The Museum of Arts and Design is grateful for the generosity of Marian and Russell Burke for making possible the 2019 Burke Prize.
